Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The use of Accutane has been linked to a severe stomach and intestinal condition called Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), which can cause ulcers and inflammation to the stomach, mouth, and intestines. Accutane has been linked to aggravation of pre-existing IBD or even the onset of symptoms in patients who never had the disease before.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease is much different than, and should not be confused with, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which is a milder condition. IBD generally refers to either of two chronic diseases to the intestinal tract, depending on the area affected. IBD that damages only the large intestine is known as ulcerative colitis.  The variation affecting any other part of the digestive system is known as Crohn's disease.

  • blood in feces
  • rectal bleeding
  • persistent diarrhea
  • on-going stomach, chest or bowel pain
  • difficulty with swallowing

  • yellowing of skin or eyes, or
  • dark urine

IBD is a serious condition that can require ongoing medical treatment.  In the most sever cases, patients will need a long-term treatment plan by a specialist or even surgery to remove the affected part of the intestines in order to improve symptoms.

Even if your IBD was triggered by the use of Accutane, discontinuing use of the drug may not eliminate the long term effects of the disorder.
